Years ago I developed a desire to develop film using non-toxic chemicals. Turns out such a thing actually exists. Using coffee, vitamin c and washing soda, you can develop film at home! The formula has been nicknamed: Caffenol. Only catch is you need to use store bought fixer. So far my results have been bad — cause I’m dumb. First couple of batches I used tablespoons instead of teaspoons in the recipe. That’s about 3x too strong and the negatives were unusable. On my latest roll, I shot everything with my camera in manual mode, thinking it was on auto. Oops. Luckily it was all quick test shots so far. I did manage to save a couple of images in the process. Scanning is a pain in the ass, so I don’t expect this to be an everyday indulgence. It’s a cheap hobby though. Costs end up being under $10 per roll including the cost of the film.
